My great granny Epperly did not have running water. Well, if you wanted to run down the hill to
the spring, you could have “running water”.
She had an outhouse out back just a short walk from the house. Hot water was always in the tank on the back
of the wood cookstove and fresh water to drink in the big crock on the shelf
near the back door. But for washing and
cleaning, she had rain barrels under each downspout. With the mosquito wiggle-tail larvae in the
rain barrels, no one dared to drink out of the rain barrel, no matter how
thirsty they were nor how hot the day was.
But the cool fresh water from the spring … oh, my! How refreshing! The barrels were wooden and lasted forever …
well almost forever. But when they
cracked it was always near the bottom.
And the leak was not discovered until it was totally dry. What a contrast between the fresh cool water
of the spring and the dank, musty water of the rain barrel! Hey, have you forsaken the Lord for hollow
pleasures? Have you discarded the Lord
for fleeting follies? The Lord said it
best to Jeremiah in Jeremiah 2:13, “For my people have committed two evils;
they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out
cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.” In the whole scheme of things, always choose
the Lord. Don’t go after the trinkets of
the world. The world will always
disappoint you while the dear Lord will never disappoint you. Think about it.
