Acts 17:10,11 And
the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who
coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more noble than
those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of
mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
Today is Sophie’s birthday! Happy birthday Sophie! Paul and Silas left
Philippi, traveled through Amphipolis and Apollonia, and came to Thessalonica.
As was his custom, Paul attended the local synagogue on the Sabbath day. What
day of the week is the Sabbath day? The Jews worshiped God on Saturday, but the
Christians worshiped God on the Lord’s Day. When is the Lord’s Day? Every
Sunday that we go to church, we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus on Easter
Sunday morning! So Paul went to church on Saturday and on Sunday! But he went to the synagogue on Saturday to reason
with the Jews about Jesus Christ, their Messiah. Some of the Jews believed, but
some did not. Some of the Gentiles believed, but some did not. But the Jews who
didn’t believe were angry with Paul and caused an uproar in the city. The
authorities tried to calm things down and came looking for Paul and Silas,
thinking that they were the source of the uproar. But when they couldn’t find
them, they blamed Jason, one of the new Christians. The other Christians sent
Paul and Silas away to Berea and to safety. I like the people at Berea. They
heard Paul preach and then they opened their Scriptures and read for themselves
to see if Paul was telling them the truth. That is our job. We need to read the
Scriptures for ourselves and find out the truth for ourselves. We should be
like those at Berea.
