Acts 17:13-15 But
when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached
of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people. And then
immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas
and Timotheus abode there still. And they that conducted Paul brought him unto
Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him
with all speed, they departed. The Jews were not satisfied to disagree with
Paul, they attacked him personally. Those Jews who didn’t believe Paul’s
preaching in Thessalonica followed Paul to Berea and stirred up trouble. The
believers at Berea were concerned for Paul’s safety and sent him on to Athens.
The rest of Paul’s group was to follow later. By the way, who was Timotheus? That was the Roman spelling
of Timothy, Paul’s young preacher boy. Can you guess who Silvanus was? That is
the Roman spelling of Paul’s partner, Silas. The same words and the same names often are different in
different languages. Do you think Paul was going to keep quiet while he was
waiting in Athens for Silas and Timothy? No, he wasn’t. He couldn’t wait to
preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to those in Athens!
We’ll find out what
happened in Athens tomorrow.
