I Peter 1:18,19
Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as
silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your
fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish
and without spot: The apostle Peter uses an illustration, a picture, here
in our verses for today. The Jews were commanded to use a perfect lamb for
their sacrifices. The lamb could not have any deformity at all – it had to be
the best of their entire flock. Then they would bring it to the Temple and give
it to the priest. But just before the priest took the lamb as the sacrifice,
the person bringing it would lay their hand upon the lamb’s head. That meant
that the person’s sins were being atoned for by the death of that lamb. The
sacrifice meant several things: First, the lamb was dying in their place. Next,
only blood and death could pay for their sins. In this sacrifice, we see how
wicked and evil sin is. The little lamb did nothing wrong to deserve death. But
it died in the place of the person. That is the picture of Jesus Christ. Jesus
was our Lamb of God to die for our sins. He loved us so much that He died in
our place – He was our perfect Lamb that was sacrificed on the cross of
Calvary. God has such love for us! I am glad He loves us, aren’t you?
