Helping Out

I have some issues with my right shoulder (rotator cuff).  And my joints are getting stiffer with age (arthritis).  So, this morning the hot shower felt really good.  But as I was shampooing my hair, I noticed a little quirk that I had not noticed before: while I was scrubbing my scalp with my fingers, I was unconsciously moving my head back and forth in the opposite direction, effectively helping my fingers.  My fingers didn’t have to work quite as hard because my head was picking up some of the work.  Hey, that’s what the body of Christ should be doing.  As some folk age, the younger set should be helping them out.  And when young mothers are overwhelmed with their children, the grandmas at church should help with babysitting.  Experienced men should help the younger men learn how to change the brake shoes on their car.  Titus 2:1-6 admonishes the older folk to teach the younger folk.  Verse 7 sums it up: “In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works …”  Hey, let’s help one another like my head is helping my struggling fingers.  Be a blessing and receive a blessing … both with grateful hearts.

Headlamp

Whoever invented the personal headlamp should get the Nobel Prize for engineering!  I was first introduced to the headlamp in Cameroon when the lights would go out for hours at a time.  With a headlamp, you could go about your business unhindered by darkness.  And now that my eyes are growing dimmer, personal headlamps put the light right where I am looking.  Look right, the light is there; look left, the light is there too.  IF you move your head when you look.  Focus the headlamp down and the light will stay right with the bifocals!  Perfect!  Reminds me of Ephesians 5:8&11, “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.”  Hey, walk daily in the light of the Lord Jesus Christ, and you’ll see life clearly!

Comfort Food

What is your “comfort food”?  A food that brings you back to a time of wonderful memories.  I recall my Granny Epperly baking “pone bread”, which was one giant biscuit on a 9X13 cookie sheet.  She would break off a corner, pinch it up onto my plate, and pour hot sausage gravy all over it.  My wife has memories of corn meal mush.  Her mother would refrigerate the leftover mush and the next morning slice it and fry it with pancake syrup drizzled over it.  So, I had a “memory moment” this morning. My Granny Whitely used to keep 6-ounce bottles of Dr. Pepper in the refrigerator and then about ten minutes before we would drink one, she would put it into the freezer compartment of her little refrigerator and let it chill.  When she popped the lid, the water in the Dr. Pepper would instantly turn to frozen slush - not so much as to freeze the entire bottle, but just enough to put the Dr. Pepper right at the edge of freezing ... the absolute coldest that it could be.  If you will, the perfect temperature at which to drink a Dr. Pepper.  So, moments ago, I had a Dr. Pepper just like Granny Whitely used to give to me, and I thought of her and her Godly heritage.  Granny taught the ladies’ Sunday school class for many years, and she would study her Sunday school lesson every day of the week in order to be prepared for Sunday morning.  I still have her Bible memory cards that she used to study from.  The Apostle Paul recalled, with fond memory, the mother and grandmother of his protégé, Timothy.  Paul said in II Timothy 1:5, “When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.”  Hey, I have a Godly heritage.  But the greater question is, am I providing a Godly heritage to my children and grandchildren?  Hey, are you providing a Godly heritage to your children and grandchildren?  If not, why not start today.  Do they see Christ in you?  Make it so today!
