Job 1:1 There was a
man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and
upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil. There are many things
that we do not know about Job. But if we are good detectives, there are many
things that we can figure out about Job. First, we do not know where the land
of Uz was. But that isn’t critical to his story. Secondly, there are no
references to Moses or Abraham or the Israelites or to any of the books of the
Old Testament. This leads us to believe that the book of Job was written before
any of the other books in the Bible. The book of Job is probably the oldest
book in the Bible. Job was a good man who was interested in obeying God. He
didn’t have the Bible to read, but he knew what God liked and didn’t like. And
since he knew right from wrong, he tried to do the right things and tried not
to do the wrong things. Job is a good lesson for us. Usually, it isn’t knowing
the right and wrong thing to do, it is doing the right thing and not
doing the wrong thing. We always have a choice. We should choose to do
what we know is right and choose to avoid what we know is wrong. Job was a good
man. Job loved God. I hope we love God just like Job loved God. In the next few
days, we will learn much more about Job and God and, believe it or not, about
Satan.
