Matthew 6:19-21 Lay
not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt,
and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures
in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not
break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be
also. When you think of the word treasure, what comes to your mind? Don’t
you think of a wooden chest filled with gold and silver coins and all kinds of
jewels and pearl necklaces? Treasure is something that is valuable that you
look and look for. But Jesus is saying in the verses for today that there are
some treasures that won’t last forever. If you have a lovely dress, don’t get
too attached to it, because some day you will get it out only to find that
moths have eaten holes all in it. The beautiful dress will be gone. It could be
you buy a fine sports car with a powerful engine. But in just a few years, that
car will begin to rust. It won’t last forever. Or you may have some gold and
silver coins. But one day when you come in to look at your valuable coins, they
are gone! A thief has stolen them. The coins that you spent years collecting
are stolen and in someone else’s possession. But Jesus tells us to lay up
treasures in heaven. When you do a kind deed for someone, you are sending
rewards up to heaven. When you help a neighbor, you are sending treasures on up
to heaven. And when we send good things up to heaven, they are safe there. God
will have them waiting for us when we get there. Is your heart here on earthly
things? Then your heart is set on gathering things that just may decay or be
stolen. But is your heart in heaven? Then you will focus on good things that
you do for Jesus Christ and your fellow man. And you will be sending treasures
up to heaven, your eternal home.
