I Corinthians 14:22,33,40;
13:10 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them
that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but
for them which believe. For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace,
as in all churches of the saints. Let all things be done decently and in order.
But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be
done away. There are some people in churches today who speak in unknown
tongues. They believe that tongues indicate that they are “filled with the Holy
Spirit”. Our verses tell us that speaking in tongues were just for the Jewish
believers and were to demonstrate that God had saved these new believers. Acts 2
tells us that at the Day of Pentecost there were sixteen different language
groups present. And when the apostles preached to them, everyone was amazed to
hear the apostles speaking in their own language! What a miracle from God! But the
miracle wasn’t in the speaking of the apostles; the real miracle was in the
hearing of these sixteen language groups, because they all heard heard the apostles in their own language at the same time! Peter preached in one language,
but sixteen groups of people heard him in their own language! But when the 27 New Testament books
were completed, the everyone had the written Word of God. They didn’t need tongues
any more to prove that they had been converted. And as our verses say, the imperfect
(tongues) was done away with because the perfect (God’s Word) was come. We
don’t need tongues any longer; we have the Bible!
