Bid on a Job

When I worked at Mueller Iron Foundry in Chattanooga, we bid on jobs by seniority.  That meant that the worker who had been there the longest had first shot at a job.  Once you got the new job you had one month to qualify on that job.  That meant that you had one month to prove that you could do the job.  At the front gate where the timeclock was, there was a bulletin board where management posted the jobs that were available.  The workers could sign their names on the sheet of paper to bid on the job.  You could sign up for whatever job you wanted.  The man with the most seniority got the job.  Hey, that’s NOT how it works in the Christian life.  You don’t just decide which job you want in God’s economy.  God decides what He wants you to do.  That’s because we are not in charge of the universe; God is.  God works with our desires, with our qualifications, and with our skillsets, but ultimately, it is the Holy Spirit that decides how we should live our lives.  Sometimes the dear Lord will change our “wanter”.  He will meld our will and His calling.  Psalms 37:4 says, “Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”  That verse can be taken two ways.  If we find God’s pleasure, He will give us what we desire.  OR, If we find God’s pleasure, He will give to us a new “wanter” so that what we want will be His desires; He will give to us His desires and they will then be our desires.  Either way, we will find our fulfillment in God.  Actually, it’s God who signs us up on life’s bid sheet.  And God will give us the right job, regardless of our seniority.
