Years ago, Teresa D. taught at Calvary Christian school with Kathy and me. We had a mutual friend who traveled, speaking at women’s conferences. This conference speaker had a cockatiel and needed a house sitter to take care of the bird while she was gone, so Teresa stayed at her house for a week. One day Teresa was cleaning the cage and the bird escaped. It flew around the room and out the open door never to be seen again. Teresa was devastated, but there was nothing to be done. The bird was gone. Hey, just like a caged bird, sometimes in life we feel frustrated by rules and boundaries. But like the cage, boundaries are intended to keep us safe. A cockatiel cannot survive outdoors on its own in the Chattanooga winters. It will die. Cockatiels need the safe boundaries of a bird cage - for their own good. And we need boundaries in our lives in order to thrive. We do not know what is best for us. We need the dear Lord to direct us and to lead us in the right way. The old apostle John wrote in I John 5:3, “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.” Like a loving father, God knows what is best for us. If we obey God’s laws, we will be safe. Just like a cage-born cockatiel, we need God’s structure in our lives. After all, He alone knows what is best for us.
