Genesis 1:1-5 In
the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without
form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of
God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and
there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the
light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he
called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. The Bible
begins with God already existing. That is because God is eternal – He is from
everlasting to everlasting. We have a hard time wrapping our heads around
that, but that is just how it is. God has always been, and God will always be.
Period. End of discussion. And God made all of the materials that He needed on
the first day. Verse two says that everything was just there – all piled up and
disorganized. It was like the concrete blocks and two by fours and nails at
Lowe’s – they are just lying there waiting for someone to buy them and take
them home and build something like a new bedroom or a garage or something else.
So after God made all of the stuff, he created light. He didn’t make the sun
until day four. But God made the light on day one! That is because God Himself
is light! And God didn’t have the sun just yet to mark the evening and the
morning, like we do. But God knew when it was evening time and God knew when it
was morning time. So God finished His work and the first day was over. We start
the next day at midnight, but the Jewish day starts at sundown in the evening.
So Friday starts at 6 PM on Thursday evening and goes until 6 PM the next day.
That is why it says in Genesis 1:5 that the evening and the morning was the
first day. I’m glad that God knew what He was doing when He made everything,
aren’t you? And I’m glad that God knows what He is doing in my life and in your
life, aren’t you?
