Exodus 17:8 Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in
Rephidim. This was the first time that Israel had to fight against an
enemy. They had been slaves for four hundred years and had never stood up to
their Egyptian masters. But soon, they would be going into the Promised Land
and God had to toughen them up for the difficult battles ahead. So God sent
Amalek out to fight against them. Moses told Joshua to pick him out some good
men and to do battle against Amalek. Moses would stand on a nearby hill with
his shepherd’s staff. By now, Moses was used to the miracles that came with his
staff. And so, when Moses held the staff high above his head, Joshua started
winning, but when his hands grew weary and he dropped them down to his side,
Joshua started to lose. Moses’ helpers, Aaron and Hur saw the dilemma, and took
action. They got a big stone and had Moses to sit down. Then with Aaron on the
one side and Hur on the other, they held Moses’ hands up all day until the
evening sunset. And that was a great lesson for everyone involved. Some fight,
some help, and some call upon the Lord for the victory in the battle. And that’s
a good lesson for us too. Just like Aaron and Hur, we can be a helper to our parents,
or to our Sunday school teacher, or to our pastor. We need to be helpers and do
what we can for others.
