Exodus 18:12,13,17,18
And Jethro, Moses' father in law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God:
and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father
in law before God. And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge
the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening.
And Moses' father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.
Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for
this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself
alone. Moses’ father-in-law came over for a visit. They had an enjoyable
time and ate and talked all day long. But then Moses had to go back to work the
next day. Jethro, his father-in-law saw Moses working as a judge all day from
daylight till dark. So he warned Moses. “Moses,” he said, “You are doing too
much. You are going to wear yourself out. You need to train assistants who can
do some of the work for you.” Moses thought about what Jethro had said. Jethro
was right; it was too much for one man. So Moses appointed rulers of thousands,
rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifty, and rulers of ten. The more skillful the
man was, the more people Moses gave him to manage. Moses had less work and more
work got done. That is a good lesson for us: let good people help us get more
work done in less time. That is a good plan.
