Judges 7:19,20 So
Gideon, and the [three] hundred men that were with him … cried, The sword of
the LORD, and of Gideon. Gideon gathered as many men as he could, but he
only had 32,000 men while the Midianites numbered 135,000! Gideon was worried,
but God made it worse! God told Gideon that he had too many men! What! Gideon’s
army was out-numbered four to one, but God said that Gideon had too many men!
So Gideon obeyed God and told his men, “If you are afraid, go home!” And 22,000
men did! Only 10,000 soldiers remained. But God told Gideon that he still had
too many men! So Gideon took his men down to the river for a test. Those
soldiers who lapped water like a dog, Gideon kept; those who recklessly laid on
their bellies and drank water with their heads down, were sent home. Gideon was
left with 300 men! His army was outnumbered 450 to 1! And that was exactly what
God wanted! God wanted Gideon to depend upon him, not on his army. Each soldier
was issued a clay pitcher, a torch, and a trumpet. What unusual weapons! Gideon
divided his army into three groups of 100 and told them to watch closely and do
exactly what he did. They quietly surrounded the Midianite army with their
torches covered by their clay pitchers. Suddenly, Gideon broke his pitcher and
shouted, “The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!” and began to blow on his
trumpet. All 300 soldiers did exactly the same. The sleepy Midianites awoke to
all of this noise and bright lights and grabbed their swords and began slashing
for all they were worth. But in their confusion, they were killing each other!
Those who escaped, Gideon’s 300 chased. When the rest of Israel saw the
Midianites fleeing, they took after them. God delivered Midian by a fearful
leader with trumpets and torches as weapons! God can use anyone to do abything!
Never forget!
