Birds and Humans

This morning, I made my coffee and toast with cream cheese and went outside on the back deck to enjoy God’s creation.  I usually wake up and hit the ground running, but today, I took the time to sit and relax and observe.  I enjoy the birds in the back yard.  They flit about the feeders and the fountain and, as I watch, I see pettiness in the birds that is true in humans as well.  Some birds try to guard their bird feeder from other birds and protect their area from intruders.  But what they don’t realize is that I am the one who fills the feeder every couple of days.  If this bird is careful and guards the feeder well, the seed may last an extra day.  If the bird can’t guard the feeder as well, the seed lasts a day less.  But in both cases, I fill up the feeder.  The bird can fret and worry, or the bird can relax and enjoy other activities.  Either way, the feeder is filled.  Hey, how often do we worry about our bank account or stock portfolio?  But we fail to realize that God is in control and God keeps us alive and well.  So, we have two choices: worry or trust God.  It’s that simple.  Oh, but it isn’t simple.  Your son goes off to college and you begin to think of the trouble that he can get into.  You worry that he will cut class.  What are his friends like?  Who is he dating?  The worry list goes on and on.  And just like the birds, we can try to guard our area, not realizing that the dear Lord is watching over our son better than we ever could.  Silly us.  Silly birds.  Jesus said in Matthew 10:29-31, “Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.”  It’s our job to do our best and to watch over our children.  But remember: God is watching over ALL of us.  He’s got this.  God is in control.  Relax.  Sip your coffee, eat your toast, and watch the birds.  And learn.
