Nicodemus was an important man in his community and religion. And he was humble enough to come to the controversial rabbi, Jesus, to inquire of Him on this new teaching about being ‘born again’. Jesus explained, and I think that Nicodemus got it, because Nicodemus was one of two men who hazarded their reputation by taking down the body of Jesus and giving Him a proper burial. Jesus explained to Nicodemus the spiritual new life as a ‘new birth’. And it is. At the moment of our physical birth, we go from darkness (in our mother’s womb) into light (the big, new world). We go from confinement to freedom. We go from the old life to a new life. Paul summed it up in II Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” Salvation in Jesus Christ is as if we are becoming a totally new creature. And we are. We were sinners and aliens, but we become the children of God! Hey, have you had that transformation in your life? Have you been ‘born again’?
