I enjoyed my Santa Claus photo session Last Tuesday at Hickory Valley Christian School with Suzanne Pope Lemery. Great children’s photographer! Several of the kids colored Santa pictures and one little fellow wrote Santa a full-page letter. He included what he wanted for Christmas but used most of his letter telling Santa how good he had been all year. It seemed to me that a kid who had to go overboard to tell me how good they were … wasn’t. He said wonderful things about Santa (buttering me up) but the letter was mostly about himself. I understand that he is just a little guy, but the letter was self-serving. Isaiah said in Isaiah 64:6, “But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” Isaiah paints a pretty bleak picture of human righteousness. Instead of telling the Lord how good we are, we should ask for grace and throw ourselves upon the mercy of a holy God. Asking for forgiveness is a better plan than boasting. And humility works better … with Santa and with God.
