Genesis 11:31,32
And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai
his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from
Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran,
and dwelt there. And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and
Terah died in Haran. God called Abraham out of the city of Ur in the land
of the Chaldees to sojourn. Sojourn means to camp out and to have ne particular
place to go. Actually, God knew where He was taking Abraham, but Abraham didn’t
know where God was taking him. And in those early days Abraham was known as
Abram. Later God changed his name. Can you think of three other men who God
changed their names? God changed Jacob’s name to Israel. God changed Peter’s
name to Cephas. And God changed Saul’s name to Paul. But back to our story –
God had called Abraham and not Terah, his father. So God took them all to Haran
near where he was going to take Abraham and there Terah died. Abraham and Sarah
didn’t have any children, so they took their nephew, Lot, with them. God called
Abraham, but God did not necessarily call Lot. Lot was just going along with
his Uncle Abraham. As a matter of fact, God blessed Lot because he was
associated with Abraham, and God was blessing Abraham. Lot was a just man, but
not always faithful to God. But Lot was smart enough to know that it was good
for him to stay around Abraham. That is a good lesson for us: hang around the
right people and it will be good for us.
