Mark 16:1,2 And
when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and
Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. And very
early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at
the rising of the sun. Ladies usually have a tender heart and think about
others people. They remember birthdays and anniversaries and remember to send
thank you cards. These three ladies in our verses for today were tender as
well. They knew about death, burial, and dead bodies and what needed to be done
to bury them properly. And that’s why they were coming to the tomb. They had
loved Jesus while He was alive, and they were going to do what they could to
show respect for His dead body. These ladies were brave. They hadn’t deserted
Jesus as the disciples had. They stayed right there at the cross the whole time
and watched Jesus die. And they weren’t afraid to be seen taking care of the
body of Jesus either. They needed to put some more burial spices on Jesus, but
during the Sabbath day, they couldn’t. Jewish law didn’t permit them to walk
any further than an eighth of a mile. Jewish law didn’t permit them to carry
anything or to do any work. But it was early in the morning on Sunday, and they
were free to finish their grim work. I am sure that they were sad as they had
gathered all of the spices together at the house. I am sure they shed tears and
exchanged understanding hugs as they walked to the tomb. To the Jews, Sunday
wasn’t special. It was just the first day of the work week. But these ladies
were in for a wonderful surprise. They thought that they were going to anoint a
dead body, but unbeknown to them, Jesus had risen! His body wasn’t there to be
anointed! He was alive! Sunday would no longer be just the first day of the
week. Sunday would be resurrection day! It would be Easter Sunday!
