Ecclesiastes 10:1
Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking
savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour.
So what a way to begin our devotions – talking about dead flies. The ointment
made up by the pharmacist was supposed to be a sweet-smelling mixture. But when
the flies were attracted to the sweet-smelling ointment, they would get stuck
in the sticky perfume. And when they got stuck, they died. So now they had
sweet-smelling ointment and dead flies. A bad combination. So, what does our
verse say that this means? It means that when a wise person does something
stupid, it is like sweet ointment with stinking dead flies in it. Not a pretty
picture. So what is our take away? don’t act a fool; be a wise person.
