I Peter 3:12 For
the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their
prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. This is a
great verse that compares how God treats His own children and how He treats
those who are wicked. Notice the little conjunction right in the middle of the
verse: the word is but. But is a connecting word, but it is also a separating
word. The first part of the verse is good but the second part of the verse is
bad – bad for the wicked person, that is. It is a wonderful thought that the
Creator of the Universe is interested in watching over us and listening to our
prayers! But it is a fearful thought that God has His arms crossed and is angry
with the wicked. Of course God is a Spirit and doesn’t have eyes, ears, or
arms. But Peter uses these things to describe to us how God is and what He does. God
loves everyone, but He is against the unbeliever. But God will hear the prayer
of repentance from anyone. God is love, but God is holy as well and cannot
abide evil. There is our comparison once again. The word but is like the balance
point of a seesaw. Look for it when you read tomorrow.
