I Peter 5:2 Feed
the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by
constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; We
are commanded by God to take care of our Christian brothers and sisters. This
is a commandment for pastors from Peter, the old apostle. it is interesting
that Peter calls the church people the flock. Do you know what kind of animal
group is called a flock? Well, birds too, but I am thinking of a flock of
sheep. And that is the example that is used often to refer to God’s children.
Sheep are interesting. They are so domesticated that they cannot survive in the
wild alone. A mountain goat can, a Bighorn sheep can, but a common, ordinary,
wooly sheep can’t. They need a shepherd – they need a leader. That is what the
word oversight
means. It means to be the leader of the flock. And Peter says that it isn’t a
duty, it is a privilege. Filthy lucre means money. Oh, we should take care of
the pastor of the church, but he isn’t the pastor of a church just to get rich.
He should be the pastor because he wants to be the pastor. And the
pastor needs to feed us, the sheep spiritually. We need to understand what the
Bible says. And when we do, we should obey what the Bible says.
