Joel 2:13,32 And
rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he
is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth
him of the evil. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the
name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall
be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall
call. When the Old Testament Jews were extremely sorrowful the would tear
their clothes and throw dust over their heads. Sounds kind of strange to us,
but I wonder what they would have thought of playing video games. So in our
verses, Joel says that God would rather a backslider tear his heart than to
tear his clothes. I can see that. God is more interested in speaking to the
very core of our being than for us to make some kind of an outward show. And
just like the Jew of Joel’s day, If we are truly sorry for our sins and
rebellion against our God, and if we truly repent, God will forgive and will
restore our fellowship. God stands ready to forgive and to love. But how about
us? Are we ready to ask for forgiveness and to return to God?
