Joshua 20:2 Speak
to the children of Israel, saying, Appoint out for you cities of refuge…
Back in Joshua’s day, they didn’t have police. When someone killed a man, it
was the responsibility of the next of kin to avenge the dead man’s blood. It
was his job to track down the killer and destroy him. But if the death was
self-defense or an accident, Moses and Joshua provided six cities of refuge
where the innocent man could flee to. A judge would provide safety inside the
city walls for the innocent man. And on the year of Jubilee, everyone was
forgiven. This seemed odd, but it was fair for both sides. Fair for the ones
who lost a loved one and fair for the ones who were innocent. God cares about
both.
