When I was a kid, my dad surprised our family one afternoon
with a trip up to the little town of Perryville, in Cecil County, Maryland. There wasn’t much there except an ice cream
stand and the B & O railroad tracks.
But Dad had heard of a holly tree owned by the railroad. Beginning in 1930, the railroad had decorated
the 60-year-old tree with huge ornaments and full-sided colored light
bulbs. The star on the top was
spectacular! Part of the mystique was
that the tree was in the middle of nowhere right near the railroad tracks. To cap off the evening, we had ice cream at
the little stand. It stayed open in
December and cashed in on the tree’s drawing.
Thanks, Dad, for wonderful memories!
