I Kings 3:23-25
Then said the king, The one (woman) saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy
son is the dead: and the other (woman) saith, Nay; but thy son is the dead, and
my son is the living. And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a
sword before the king. And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and
give half to the one, and half to the other. Wow! These verses sound like
Solomon was brutal, but he wasn’t - he was very wise! And where did his wisdom
come from? Exactly! From God. Solomon was faced with a dilemma. Two pregnant
women living together delivered their newborn babies at the same time at the
house where they were both living alone. No one else knew the new babies. One
woman claimed that the other woman was sleeping and rolled over, accidentally
smothering her baby. When she awoke to discover that her baby was dead, she
quietly stole the other woman’s living baby replacing it with the dead baby.
When her friend awoke, she discovered the dead baby, which she claimed was not
her own. Both women claimed the living baby as theirs and there were no other
witnesses. What was Solomon to do? God gave Solomon wise insight. Solomon faked
that he was going to cut the living baby in half and give half to each woman.
Naturally, the baby’s true mother would never let that happen, so she
immediately gave up her dispute offering to give the other woman the living
baby. She would rather give her baby to the other woman than to see it killed! Solomon
instantly knew the true mother and promptly gave the baby to her. Solomon was
wise, but his wisdom came from God, the source of all wisdom. Trust in God; He
will give you wisdom too!
