II Samuel 3:30

II Samuel 3:30 So Joab and Abishai his brother slew Abner, because he had slain their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle. When Saul and his three sons were killed in battle, Saul’s captain, Abner, backed Ishbosheth to be the next king of Israel. But Samuel had anointed David to be king of Israel, so a bitter civil war went on and on. But David’s popularity and strength increased. Joab was captain of David’s army and he had two brothers who were soldiers as well. One of them, Asahel, chased after Abner. Abner didn’t want to fight Asahel because Asahel was just a young man. But Asahel kept chasing after Abner until Abner had to do something. As Abner ran, he thrust the butt end of his spear behind him and jabbed Asahel under the fifth rib, right where his heart was. He died right on the spot. Asahel’s older brother, Joab was bitter and plotted his revenge. As David’s popularity increased, Abner sent a message for a truce and a peace treaty. The warriors met at a specified location to discuss the details of the treaty. But as the two captains of the armies met and shook hands, Joab got his revenge. He was left-handed, and as Abner and Joab shook right hands, Joab drew out a hidden dagger with his left hand and stabbed Abner right in the heart! Abner had trusted Joab, but Joab had betrayed the truce. Abner had been honorable, but a fool for trusting Joab. Now he was a dead fool. Abner should have been careful.
