II Samuel 1:17,19
And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son:
The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places: how are the mighty fallen!
Saul was killed in battle along with his three sons. We know that David loved
Jonathan, but in our verse for today, it is clear that David loved Saul too.
But that is crazy! Saul chased David trying to kill him for years. How could
David still like him? David truly believed that Saul was God’s anointed. And
even though Saul was angry with David, David was not angry with Saul. What a
good lesson for us! Was Saul the king of Israel? Yes. Had Samuel anointed Saul
the king of Israel? Yes. As the king, did he deserve David’s respect? Yes. So
even though David ran for his life, he respected God’s anointed. Actually,
David respected Saul because he trusted God. Saul was God’s choice for king.
David was God’s choice to be the next king, but David trusted God and was
willing to wait until God decided it was time for David to be the king. So, can
we trust God? Yes. He knows what is best. But, do we trust God? I hope
so.
