II Samuel 4:4

II Samuel 4:4 And Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth. David and Jonathan and Saul and Mephibosheth lived in a brutal time 3,000 years ago. When a king died and a different king took over, the new king cleaned house and got rid of anyone related to the old king. The new king didn’t want anyone to threaten his position as the new king. So when the caretaker of little Mephibosheth heard that Saul and Jonathan were dead, she assumed that David would be after everyone in Saul’s family, including five-year-old Mephibosheth. So she grabbed him up to escape as fast as she could, dropping the little boy along the way. But David wasn’t afraid of Mephibosheth. David knew that God had made him king. Years later, David searched out any relative of Saul’s to show kindness to for the sake of Jonathan, David’s dear friend. Mephibosheth became as a son to David. How wrong the caretaker had been! Mephibosheth went from being a fugitive to being the son of the king! Isn’t that a great picture of us? We were worthless sinners, but Jesus made us His own dear sons and daughters! We are the children of the King of the universe!
