I Kings 4:29 And
God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart,
even as the sand that is on the sea shore. Solomon was, not only wise, but
he was kind. Solomon was a good king and managed his army well. He was able to
levy taxes and build a great army to fight against his waring neighbors. But
with a strong army, he was able to intimidate his enemies and they didn’t want
to tangle with him. So he was actually at peace with his dangerous neighbors. One
of our former presidents, Teddy Roosevelt, said, “Walk softly, but carry a big
stick.” That could have been Solomon’s motto. But Solomon was not only known
for his army, he was known for his wisdom and “largeness of heart”. Solomon was
kind and generous. He was probably even kind and generous with his enemies. If
they were afraid to fight him, Solomon could afford to be kind to them, which
further made their countries peaceful. So, Solomon was clever and wise and
strong. But where did all of this come from? From God. God gave Solomon wisdom.
And along with wisdom, God gave him riches, power, and peace with his enemies.
God is great and God is good! Amen!
