II Chronicles 25:1,2
Amaziah was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned
twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Jehoaddan of
Jerusalem. And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, but not
with a perfect heart. I think that you can easily see the problem with King
Amaziah’s life. He was a good king on the outside, but his heart was not
perfect with God on the inside. But be careful: God doesn’t expect us to be
perfect. But God does expect us to have a perfect heart. Let me explain. When
we love God, we want to do right. That is the inside. But our bodies are
tempted to do wrong. That is the outside. So God expects us to be right on the
inside and to try to be right on the outside. But King Amaziah did not. He
tried to do right on the outside without being right on the inside.
Sorry, King Amaziah, that won’t work. God sees the heart. Hey, that’s true for
us: God sees our hearts. So, here is the key: Be right on the inside and God
will help you as you try to be right on the outside.
