II Chronicles 26:1,3-5

II Chronicles 26:1,3-5 Then all the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in the room of his father Amaziah. Sixteen years old was Uzziah when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty and two years in Jerusalem. … And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Amaziah did. And he sought God in the days of Zechariah, … and as long as he sought the LORD, God made him to prosper. King Uzziah was a good king - as long as he sought the Lord. But there was a time in Uzziah’s life when he decided to take over the job of the high priest. For some crazy reason, Uzziah picked up the censer and went into the Temple to offer incense. The censer was a small box on swinging chains that contained coals of fire that was used to create sweet-smelling smoke in the Temple. It was the High Priest’s job to bring incense into the Temple to burn, but King Uzziah grabbed the censer and went where he wasn’t supposed to go. Azariah, the priest confronted him, but Uzziah wouldn’t listen. Suddenly, where the sweet-smelling smoke was billowing, Uzziah was covered with leprosy. He remained leprous until his death some years later. Jotham, his son, reigned in his stead while Uzziah lived isolated in another house. God punishes sin. Sometimes in this life; sometimes in the next. But God always punishes sin.
