I Thessalonians
5:19 Quench not the Spirit. In 1971, I worked at the Jim Robbins Seat Belt
Company in Mt. Clemens, Michigan. We made seat belts for Ford, General Motors,
and Chrysler corporation. The seat belt buckles were made of heavy steel and
had to be heat treated to make them hardened. They went on a conveyor belt
through an oven that heated them to almost 2,0000! At the end of the
belt was the quench tank full of oil that immediately cooled the metal parts
from 20000 to room temperature. The red-hot metal parts sizzled as
they fell into the oil. The cherry-red parts were immediately quenched to a
dull grey metallic color. Their glowing fire was instantly put out. What a good
example of a dying Christian life. We start out on fire for God when we are born
into God’s forever family. But the cares of this world and discouragements around us soon
cool us down to a dull grey, boring life. We sleep in church and can’t wait
until the service is over. We lose our fire for Jesus Christ, and we cool down
to an ordinary, run-of-the-mill Christianity. What a shame. We stop listening
to God and we smother the dear Holy Spirit Who indwells us. We should be living
for God, but we are living for self. Stop! Don’t do it! Don’t give in to Satan
and his lies! Do not quench the Holy Spirit! Stay on fire for God!
