Union Gospel Mission has been used of God for many, many
years. I think that we are closest to
God when we help those who cannot do anything for us in return. And most of those who are reached by Union
Gospel Mission find themselves destitute of most of this world’s goods. And I salute Union Gospel Mission for its
service to the city for these 70 years.
I started Tennessee Temple College in 1967 and ministered at Union
Gospel Mission several times. Often, Dr.
Wymal Porter would ask me to lead the singing when he preached on Wednesday
evenings. He and his dear wife would
stop by my dorm and pick me up and we would ride together down Main Street to
the mission. I wasn’t a very good music leader,
but I felt right at home at the mission.
It was easy to get the men to sing.
I wasn’t as concerned with the quality of the singing as I was with the
enthusiasm of the singing, and the men never disappointed me. They sang with all their might! And after the singing, Dr. Porter never
disappointed me either when he opened the Word of God. His messages were simple, to the point,
evangelistic, and powerful. Many men
answered the altar call after the preaching, and I had the privilege to pray
with some of them as they knelt in prayer.
Thank you, Brother Jon, as you continue the ministry begun so many years
ago. Blessings and prayers to you and
your staff! Gerald Whitely 3-2-20
