Amos 6:1

Amos 6:1 Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came! Our verse reminds us not to get too comfortable because God has work for us to do. Solomon’s son, Rehoboam, proved to be a poor king, and the nation of Israel was divided into two kingdoms. The two southern tribes remained loyal to Rehoboam, and were known as Judah. The ten northern tribes rebelled, crowning Jeroboam as their king, and were known as Israel. The kingdom of Judah trusted in Jerusalem, their fortified capital high atop Mt. Zion. Israel trusted in Samaria, their fortified capital, which was also atop a mountain. Both capitals were perched on mountains, making them easy to defend. But God’s prophet, Amos, warned both Israel and Judah not to get too comfortable. Although they had good strategic positions, their safety didn’t come from their fortifications; their safety came from God. Any wall can be broken through and any position can be taken over in battle. And that’s a great lesson for us. We should be careful and not trust in our abilities. We should trust in God! Should we depend upon our brains or our good looks? Should we depend upon our money or our good health? Amos would say, no. We should depend upon the Lord, our God. Our Safety is only found in God.

Amos 5:18,19

Amos 5:18,19 Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light. As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him. These verses are a great word picture! Sometimes we wish that evil people would get what they deserve. But punishment in the Lake of Fire is terrible. There is never ever any relief and never any escape. When we wish for the coming of Jesus, there are many people who will not be prepared. It will be a terrible day of judgement for them. Wishing for the Day of the Lord may be good for us who are saved, but it will be terrible for those who are not saved. So be careful what you wish for.

Amos 5:14

Amos 5:14 Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken. Our verse reminds us that we have a choice to make every day. We may choose good or we may choose evil. Satan wants us to choose evil, but God wants us to choose good. It is easy to choose evil and to follow the broad road, but it is harder to choose God and the narrow road. The broad road leads to destruction while the narrow road leads to life everlasting. So be careful when you choose because you are choosing life or death. Wow!
