John 5:9-11 And
immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the
same day was the sabbath. The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It
is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed. He answered
them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.
When Jesus healed the impotent man and told him to take up his bed and walk, it
was on the Sabbath day. The Jewish leaders were very strict about what the
Jews could and could not do on the Sabbath day. So when they saw the man
walking with his bed roll on the Sabbath day, they were shocked! “What are you doing working on the Sabbath day?” they demanded. But they didn’t think.
Jesus was the one who had made the rule about the Sabbath day in the Old Testament
– He was God. So Jesus could override the Sabbath day rule if He wanted to. After
all, He was the one who had made the rule in the first place. If anyone had a
question, the impotent man had it all figured out: The One who healed him was
the same One who told him to take up his bed and walk. Jesus did the healing
which proved that He had the power over the Sabbath day. Jesus was the man! He
was God Himself!
