Mark 1:1-4 The
beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; As it is written in
the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare
thy way before thee. The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the
way of the Lord, make his paths straight. John did baptize in the wilderness,
and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. The book of
John begins with the birth of John, the Baptist. But the book of Mark begins
with the public ministry of Jesus, which began when John Baptized him in the
Jordan River. John was preaching the message of repentance. But salvation is
two-fold: repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. John preached that the Messiah
was coming and everyone needed to get ready. That involved repenting from their
sins. But when Jesus came to be baptized by John, He had no sins that he needed
to repent of. Jesus was being baptized
to set an example for us who would follow. And Jesus wanted to openly show his
approval of John’s message. So when Jesus was baptized, His earthly ministry
officially began. And God, the Father showed His approval by speaking from
heaven. And God, the Holy Spirit showed His approval by landing on Jesus in the
form of a dove. The Holy Trinity was right there, together as Jesus was
baptized. What an exciting day it must have been!
