Mark 4:26,27 And he
said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground;
And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow
up, he knoweth not how. Jesus is reminding us that there are many things in
life that we don’t understand, but still use. We know a little about
electricity, but just exactly how the electrons move through the copper wires
is still beyond our understanding. We know gasoline explodes and is controlled
in a car’s engine, but most of us don’t understand transmissions and
alternators and air conditioners. But that doesn’t stop us from driving a car –
or if you aren’t old enough to drive, to ride in a car. When workers on the
line at South Central Growers plant seeds, we don’t know exactly how or why
they germinate and sprout into tiny little plants. But that doesn’t stop us
from planting those seeds and trusting that in a couple of days that they will
actually sprout up. And Jesus reminds us in our verse for today that we don’t
fully understand exactly how the spiritual world works. We may not understand
soteriology or eschatology or predestination or propitiation, but we do know
that God loves us and Jesus died for us. And we can trust in our loving God to
take us safely to heaven when we close our eyes for that long sleep called
death. God knows it all. He will keep us safe and will never let us down! We
may not understand it all, but God does. So let’s just trust Him!
