Numbers 18:20,21
And the LORD spake unto Aaron, Thou shalt have no inheritance in their land,
neither shalt thou have any part among them: I am thy part and thine
inheritance among the children of Israel. And, behold, I have given the
children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service
which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.
As the Children of Israel were going into the Promised Land, each tribe had
their own inheritance. The tribe of Joseph was divided up into two tribes:
Manasseh and Ephraim. But one tribe did not have an inheritance. That was the
tribe of Levi. The Levites were the priestly tribe. They were to be the
teachers and preachers. So they were dispersed among the other twelve tribes in
order to be near to the people who they were teaching. So the Levites lived in
the cities without farmlands. So how were the Levites to live? Well, they lived
just like your pastor does today. You pay your tithes and offerings to the
church and your pastor is paid by the church. The Children of Israel paid their
tithes and offerings to the priests and the priests and Levites lived on those
offerings. They served and were paid for their service. Our pastors serve and
they are paid by their service. And that is right. Our pastor deserves our
respect and our money so that he can live and serve us!
