Great Expectations

Sometimes our expectations for Christmas are too high.  My dear wife works all too hard to prepare the perfect Christmas Breakfast and dinner.  We try to get the perfect gift, only to find the stores are all sold out.  The Amazon orders are delivered the day after Christmas.  That dress for the daughter-in-law doesn’t quite fit.  Hey, we are not alone.  Mary had expectations of a perfect wedding to Joseph, her espoused groom.  And when she explained to her family that her pregnancy (before they were married) was of the Holy Spirit, they were incredulous.  Joseph hurriedly married Mary, and they set up housekeeping under a cloud of shame.  And then, when Mary was nine months pregnant, she was forced to ride a donkey to Bethlehem to pay taxes commanded by the Roman emperor.  Arriving late, there was no room for the little couple, so Mary had to deliver her baby in a stable.  Hey, we see the perfect Hallmark story on TV and the perfect family on facebook reels, but these are not true.  Life is messy and problems are real.  So, this Christmas, say, like Mary said in Luke 1:38, “… be it unto me according to thy word ...”  Just accept the will of God and praise the Good Lord this Christmas season.  Hey, it’ll be just fine.  Don’t have impossible expectations, just revel in the celebration of the wonderful, miraculous birth of the Christ Child.  After all, it’s all about Jesus.  Yes, it is!
