When sailing into the wind, you must zig-zag attacking the wind at 30°, first to one side, and then to the other side. Surprisingly, the vacuum (Bernoulli's principle) on the leeward side of the sails will pull the boat forward. But too close towards the wind, and the sails flutter instead of filling, the boat stalls, and speed is lost. Too far from the wind and the sails fill too much and again, speed is lost. But you can’t see the wind. So, to get the right amount of wind in the sails, sailors use telltales to see what they can’t see. Red telltales are used on the port side (left) and green telltales are used on the starboard side (right). You can’t see the wind, but you can see what the wind does to the telltales. The same is true in the Christian life. I can’t see what is in your heart, but I can see your actions on the outside, which reveal what is on the inside. Jesus said in Luke 6:45, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.” If I bump a man carrying a glass full of something, he is going to spill what he is carrying. If he has milk in his glass, he will spill milk. If he is carrying tea, he will spill tea. Simple. What is in your heart will come out. So, get your heart in tune with God so that you can spill out the dear Lord all day long. A good plan.
