I go to cardiac rehab three days a week. One of our clients is a real character. He has breathing issues, and can’t exercise very much, so he comes to cardiac rehab mainly for the social benefit. He likes to talk, and of course, he likes to have an audience to listen to him talk. And being the sucker that I am, I am usually his audience. So, we settled into a routine: I get him a cup of coffee, he gives me a single-use glass cleaning wipe, and we sit and talk. Well, more accurately, I listen and clean my glasses while he talks. I am the captive audience until someone else arrives, usually an older client who doesn’t exercise much either. So, when the two of them engage in their discussions, I sneak away and start my morning exercises, albeit fifteen minutes late. Another plan to get away earlier is to bring up the name of Jesus as often as I can. The name of Jesus ends many conversations. Although my friend does not know the Scriptures, he adheres to Proverbs 18:24, “A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly …” Who says that you can’t buy your friends? But you can buy a friend … with lens wipes.
