Colossians 2:12 Buried
with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of
the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. The Apostle Paul
explains the whole purpose of baptism. He tells the church at Colosse, and to us
who are reading their letter, that baptism is a matter of identification.
Baptism is a picture of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
When we are baptized, the pastor puts us down into the water and then brings us
up again. Hopefully. Ha, ha! So when we are baptized, we are showing the death,
burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. But it is us who are doing it. By us
being baptized, we are joining Jesus Christ in His death, burial, and
resurrection. But we are alive. We haven’t been buried, and we certainly haven’t
been resurrected yet. And that gets to the faith part. In baptism, we are
joining Jesus in His death and burial. And by faith, we will be joining Jesus
in His resurrection someday. Death is a sad event. Burial is a sad event. But
resurrection and coming back alive again, well that is exciting. And by faith, we
believe we will raise up from the grave and live forever with Jesus Christ, our
Savior!
