Matthew 26:33-35
Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of
thee, yet will I never be offended. Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto
thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. Peter
said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee.
Likewise also said all the disciples. When Jesus was eating the last supper
with His disciples, He told them that He would soon leave them. He went on to
say that they all would all bail out on Him . But Peter was furious. “I would
never deny you, Jesus,” Peter said. And all of the disciples joined in with
Peter’s bold words. But just a few hours later, Jesus was arrested in the
Garden of Gethsemane by Roman soldiers and an angry mob. Peter did stand up for
Jesus, but his enthusiasm soon faded. He hid in the shadows at Jesus’ trial and
ended up denying that he even knew Jesus of Nazareth. And as the rooster crowed
in the early morning hours of that crucifixion day, Peter remembered Jesus’
prediction. He had indeed denied his Lord. Peter went out and wept bitterly.
But after Jesus ascended back to heaven and the Holy Spirit came upon Peter
with great power, Peter was a changed man. He was confident. But His confidence
didn’t come from himself; his confidence came from the Holy Spirit of God. And
that same Spirit is inside of us! We have the Spirit of God and the power of
God! Now let’s live like we do!
