Matthew 28:18-20
And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in
heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in
the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to
observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you
alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. After Jesus’ resurrection, He
taught the disciples a little while longer. I’m sure that they listened
carefully, for they knew that Jesus would soon go back to heaven. Our verses
for today are called the Great Commission. A commission is when an important
person officially appoints someone to do something on their behalf. A millionaire
will commission an artist to paint a portrait of his wife. The army will
commission an officer to serve as a leader. And here, Jesus commissions his
followers to be a witness for Him. Hey, wait a minute! We are followers of Jesus
too. So actually, this commission that was given to the disciples applies to us
too! Jesus said that all power was given unto Him. And He was giving this power
to us to use. We are to go out and preach, and teach and make disciples for
Him. That is our commission from Jesus, the very Son of God. He has
commissioned us. Let’s do it!
