Matthew 27:50,51

Matthew 27:50,54 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God. When Jesus died on the cross of Calvary, He died on purpose. He was not a victim, His death was all in God’s plan to save us from our sins. Jesus’ life was not taken from Him, He laid His life down for you and for me. And the Roman soldiers were there as executioners and witnesses. They had seen many executions before, but none like this one. Their leader, a centurion, was no doubt a tough old soldier. He had slashed many a man on the battlefield and wasn’t bothered one bit as he drove the huge nails through the victim’s hands and feet. But Jesus was different. Jesus laid his hands down without a struggle. Jesus took the abuse and mocking. And as the centurion watched the compassion of Jesus Christ and saw how He suffered quietly, he knew that something was different about Jesus. And when Pilate sent the name plate to be posted above Jesus, he thought carefully. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews”. And when the centurion felt the earthquake and saw the darkness, he just knew that Jesus was more than just a man. He knew that Jesus truly was the Son of God. The centurion’s own statement gave witness that he had become a believer in Jesus Christ. Truly Jesus was the Son of God!
