I Kings 14:22 And
Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD, and they provoked him to jealousy with
their sins which they had committed, above all that their fathers had done.
Not only did Jereboam and the ten northern tribes of Israel do evil and worship
idols, but Rehoboam and Judah did evil and worshiped idols too! But remember,
God is not mocked. God allowed Shishak king of Egypt to come up against
Jerusalem and ransack the city. Shishak took all of Solomon’s treasures left to
Rehoboam. And Shishak took all of the treasures out of the house of God, as
well. Solomon’s golden shields were gone, so Jeroboam made brass shields to put
up in their place. What a sad substitute. Rehoboam traded God for idols and
then had to trade ordinary brass for pure gold. But Jeroboam didn’t see his
problem. He went along as if nothing was the matter. When God punishes us, we have
two choices: ignore God or own up to our mistakes and tell God we are sorry. Rehoboam
chose to ignore God and God ignored him. He died and was buried in Jerusalem.
Oh well. Jeroboam didn’t learn his lesson. But I did; did you?
