I Kings 19:1-4 And
Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the
prophets with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So
let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one
of them by to morrow about this time. And when (Elijah) saw that, he arose, and
went for his life … and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he
requested for himself that he might die … Ahab was on Mt. Carmel and saw
the fire fall from heaven, but Jezebel wasn’t. She didn’t see the tremendous
miracle. So she was still unchanged in her anger against God and God’s
messenger, Elijah. She threatened Elijah and Elijah ran for his life. God was
disappointed with Elijah and gave him a second and a third chance. But Elijah asked
God just to take his life. Elijah said, “Just take me on up to heaven.” So God
told Elijah to anoint Jehu as king and appoint Elisha as prophet, and God took
Elijah on up to heaven in a whirlwind and a fiery chariot with flaming horses.
Elijah did many mighty works and miracles for God, but he just couldn’t get
over Jezebel. He didn’t finish strong. He gave up at the end. He was a great
prophet, but ended weak. A great lesson for all of us.
