II Kings 5:1 Now
Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his
master, and honourable, because by him the LORD had given deliverance unto
Syria: he was also a mighty man in valour, but he was a leper. Because of
Israel’s sins under King Ahab, God let the Syrians defeat Israel. They captured
many cities and carried away many people as slaves. Naaman was the captain of the
Syrian army, but he came down with the incurable disease of leprosy. Naaman’s
wife was crying one day and her little Jewish slave girl heard her. Mrs. Naaman
explained her grief and the little girl felt sorry for her and for her husband,
Naaman. The girl said, “If Mr. Naaman were to go to Israel, he could be healed
of his leprosy. I know this prophet there who loves God. I just know that God’s
man could heal Mr. Naaman.” So Naaman got a letter of recommendation from the
King of Syria and went to the king of Israel. The king of Israel sent Naaman to
Elisha. But while Naaman and his soldiers were yet a long way off, God told
Elisha that Naaman was coming. Elisha sent his servant Gehazi to meet Naaman.
Gehazi said, “My lord Elisha said to go and wash in the river Jordan dipping
yourself seven times, and you will be healed.” But Naaman was highly offended!
He was an important man and Elisha had not even bothered to come out and meet
him. He had only sent his servant. And the Jordan was a dirty little river! He
was about to leave when a loyal officer reminded him that they had come all
this way. “Why not just try it?” the man said. So Naaman did. And after he came
up the seventh time, he gasped! His leprosy was gone! His skin was as soft and
smooth as a baby’s skin! What a miracle! And to think, it all started with a
little slave girl who was faithful and helpful! Hey, are you helpful? Are you
faithful to witness for God? I hope so!
