I Chronicles 11:1-3 Then all Israel gathered
themselves to David unto Hebron, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh.
And moreover in time past, even when Saul was king, thou wast he that leddest
out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD thy God said unto thee, Thou shalt
feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be ruler over my people Israel. Therefore
came all the elders of Israel to the king to Hebron; and David made a covenant
with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they anointed David king over Israel,
according to the word of the LORD by Samuel. When Saul and his sons
were killed in battle, everyone looked to David as the next king of Israel. The
tribes of Benjamin and Judah anointed David as their king, but the ten
northern tribes of Israel anointed Ishbosheth, Saul’s remaining son.
Ishbosheth wasn’t a very good leader and offended Abner, his military captain.
Soon a conspiracy formed and Ishbosheth was assassinated. The Ten Northern
tribes sent messengers to David to get him to be their king too. Most of them
had already wanted David to be their king, but Saul’s son had taken over before
they could react. So it was a touchy situation. They wanted David as their
king, but they also wanted to respect the family of Saul. David graciously
accepted the throne over all of Israel. David was a wise man and a good king.
David put the Lord first and the Lord gave David great wisdom. And just like
King David, we need God and his wisdom too!
